Nineteenth Century Burials in St. Peter's Churchyard

Elizabeth Rumrill

Page 129

Up until about 1965 the sexton dug all the graves at St. Peter's — by hand. It was a hard job, and he did it winter and summer.

The first sexton at St. Peter's was Reese Prichard, appointed in 1747. His duties, as set forth at that time, were:

To fill up all graves in Churchyard. [He dug them all first]
Five shillings for a grown person
Two shillings six pence for a child
To clean and sweep ye Church
To take care of ye Vessels thereunto belonging

His salary was 12 shillings.

The following were the sextons through the years in the eighteenth and nineteenth century:

1756 John Griffith 1863 Bernard Hampton
1788 David Davis 1869 Arnold Curtner
1799 William Ryles 1870 Alex. McIntyre
1820 Jacob Runker 1882 Mrs. Mclntyre
1828 John Buzzard 1886 George Hampton
1838 Moses Williams 1892 Edward Furlong
1856 John L. Brooke 1900 John Rambo

In 1904 George Hampton was again sexton; when he died in 1907 his nephew, Harry G. Whisler, took over. After the latter's retirement, C. Eugene Whisler, his son, took his place and was the faithful sexton until his death on June 28, 1978. (Thus the "job" had been in the Hampton-Whisler family for more than one hundred years!)

The listing this month takes us through the letter "S". The series will be concluded in the next issue.
