A History and Local Impact of the Schuylkill Canals

by Marianne Hooper Furman

The opening of the Schuylkill Navigation System in 1825 was hailed as the dawn of a new era in transporting goods to market and in providing water power for the establishment and growth of new industry along the river.  Building the canal was costly not just financially, but in its effects on people and the environment.  Many towns owe their very existence, many men their fortunes, and countless families their livelihood as a result of the building of the Schuylkill Navigation.

This presentation was held at the Tredyffrin Public Library in Strafford, PA on Sunday 16 September 2018, starting at 2 pm.
