Clarissa Dillon and niece

From Birth to Breeching: Childhood in Colonial Pennsylvania

by Clarissa F. Dillon, Ph.D.

Children formed an important part of the colonial population in “the world of William Penn.” Their lives were very different from those of today’s young. What was daily life like for these overlooked members of society? From Birth to Breeching presented some of the challenges and responsibilities experienced by boys and girls during their early years. A number of items, both antiques and reproductions, were used to illustrate this fascinating presentation.

Dr. Dillon is a Society member and an expert in the domestic skills of the American Colonial era.
