History Quarterly covers v1 - v42

The History Quarterly Digitization Process - Trials And Treasures

by James Brazel, with Roger D. Thorne and John O. Senior

A look into the complex and interesting process of converting our archive of printed copies of the Tredyffrin Easttown History Quarterly from their original printed form to digital files for future use as electronic assets.

An important part of this process was managing the unavoidable errors from the optical character recognition (OCR) step that followed the digitization of the original documents. These OCR errors resulted typographical errors in the digital text.

Jim Brazel led the proof-reading team that carefully reviewed the digital texts to identify errors that would require editorial correction before the digital files were published or translated to other forms for future use, including HTML for presentation on the web site.

While facing some big challenges presented by the relatively primitive publication technology used for the older issues, many fascinating things were discovered amidst this remarkable repository of historical information, and Jim shared some of the experiences and discoveries that he and his team encountered along the way.

Roger and John also shared some of their thoughts and a few pertinent anecdotes.
