Annual Member Excursion – 2026

dOn Sunday, 21 June 2026, all current Society members were invited to join us for our Annual Member Excursion, which this year took us to Phoenixville to visit the headquarters and museum of the Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area (HSPA). We have been looking forward to this visit for several years, and appreciate the hospitality of our friends at HSPA.

We convened for a guided museum tour starting at around 2 PM. Following that, we relocated to the lower level to enjoy some light refreshments and an opportunity to converse.

Before and/or after our HSPA visit, members were encouraged to explore some of the other diverse attractions available nearby. See below for some suggestions.

Portions of the following description is adapated from the HSPA website:

HSPA Building
The Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area
The Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area (HSPA) is located in the former Lutheran church building at the corner of Main and Church Streets in Phoenixville. Following an extensive renovation, the building reopened in June 2025. The lower level houses administrative offices, archives, and other support facilities, and the former sanctuary space on the upper level contains well-curated exhibits on a wide variety of subjects.

HSPA has information about local genealogy, information and photos of old buildings and homes, old local newspapers on microfilm, old photographs of people and the Phoenixville area, yearbooks from Phoenixville High School, many historical artifacts, including a Phoenix Steel Column, and many pieces of Etruscan Majolica that were made in Phoenixville in the late 1800s by Griffen, Smith & Hill. The museum contains permanent displays about town history and early Phoenixville leaders, such as Samuel Whitaker Pennypacker who was born in Phoenixville in 1843 and served as Pennsylvania Governor from 1903 to 1907, as well as rotating special exhibits.

More information may be found on the HSPA website.

Our tour, in two groups, started at approximately 2 PM. After the guided tour of the museum on the upper level, we gathered on the lower level to enjoy some light refreshments. Please note that the upper level is accessible via elevator.

The main lower-level entrance is on Church Street. Parking is available nearby in several lots (street parking is by resident permit only on Sundays). In particular, there is a public parking lot (Lot #1) with an entrance just west on Church Street, and another (Lot #9) with an entrance a half-block east of Main on Church St. Phoenixville is often busy on weekends, and allowing a little extra time to locate a parking spot is recommended, as is car-pooling with friends.

HSPA has provided the following helpful parking instructions (click to download or view a larger version):
